Interpreter’s Travels

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

People tend to think that interpreters are having a good time traveling and visiting all sorts of wonderful places.

This is not always true, so it’s nice to have the kind of assignment that allows you to get a glimpse of a place. This time I was lucky to work two half-days, and to be in a place where you can walk practically everywhere.

The weather was nice, although not at that time of the day. Still… I like this picture of Strasbourg. A couple of others are to be found on Flickr.

  • Back from Strasbourg, preparing for animal cloning on Tuesday. Would love a break, but my money urgently requested by you-know-whom/what. #

  • Wondering how some people succeed in making their very good projects sound so dull and boring. #
  • Note to speakers (when interpretation is involved): speak naturally, don’t rush through your sentence, and don’t stop at the end. #
  • This makes our job even worse. Breaking at the end of each sentence increases stress and gives very unnatural results for the listeners. #
  • Now 1 speaker is not listening to interpretation and doesn’t understand the question put to her… What a waste of time. #
  • None of the speakers this morning were native English speakers. That makes for interesting linguistic innovation… :-) #
  • One more hour tomorrow morning and that conference is over! #

  • Sorting out all the files received for the next conference. Still need to prepare them after that. #
