A Tribute To French Working Women

Some popular music for the weekend: a French feminist song!

Not only French, since ‘Femmouzes T’ was formed in Toulouse (in the south-west of France) by two women musicians, Rita Macedo from Brazil and Françoise Chapuis from France. There’s one reference here, but there’s a number of them on Google, unfortunately I haven’t found any in English.

From a linguistic point of view, the song is interesting for all those who are struggling with the feminine forms of many job names.

But of course, there’s MORE to it.

The whole song refers to the endless struggle of working women for equality, parity, equal pay for equal work.

“On parle d’égalité, on parle de parité,

Mais les femmes qui travaillent n’ont pas gagné la bataille,

On parle d’égalité, on parle de parité,

Mais les femmes qui travaillent n’ont pas fini de batailler.”

Enjoy! ;-)

That’s interesting- women all over the world still struggling with the equal work-pay-career chances topic. Nice strong singers, too. Must look up more stuff. I never hear much French-based music- even when I’ve been there its all schmalzy cabaret sort of music, like Jacques Brel. A young man in Gavargnie described French rock as “catastrophe” and I tend to agree! Some of Air is quite nifty, but some is a bit catastrophe as well! France needs people like The Living End or Keith Urban! I was so amused by the pronunciation of “Kylie Minogue” when I was in frog land as well- it sounded in English like “Keelee Minnogg”- we still call her that at our place!
