Poisson d’avril!

I had an idea of a completely goofy April Fool joke related to interpreting, but I dropped the idea for a number of reasons, one of which that I needed to concentrate on more serious business (a long translation due for delivery tomorrow).

Quite frankly, I was more interested in ‘poisson d’avril’ when I was a child, when it was still traditional to pin a paper fish unnoticed down your friends’ backs; a real one would have been better, but less practical when you lived in the middle of the countryside, and you would catch fish not in order to play with it. But much more risky, and therefore more rewarding, was pinning your well-concealed paper trophy down your parents’ backs, or better still, your teacher’s -unless the adult in question had a good sense of humor. Needless to say, our plotters’ airs probably let us down much more than we could have guessed…

On that one day, we little kids were allowed to challenge figures of authority, making it a moment to really look forward to. (Funny how these things stick, I was going to write an April Fool post about a figure of authority…)

Those were not easy times, but we were easily amused. What’s your best memory of April Fools’ Day?

    Merci Nadine,
